The Ann Arbor Public Schools Music Program is open to all levels of instrumental music students, incoming grades 6-12 in Washtenaw County. Students will have the opportunity to display their existing musical talent as well as be challenged with new skills.
Dates: Monday, June 17 through Wednesday, July 3, 2024 - Monday through Friday Location: Skyline High School Fee: $200 per class; and $400 for the Music Day Camp; $210 per week for Theater *see scheduled dates Online only registration & payment through MyPaymentsPlus Questions: Contact Brittany Osman: Facilitator at [email protected] Welcome to one of our favorite weeks in music class: Music Showcase!
During our class time, students in all grades are invited to share their personal musical talents with their peers. Some students choose to play piano, sing a song, lip synch a popular song, or bring in an instrument from home. We also have students who choose to pick an instrument from our classroom and demonstrate how it can be played. The whole goal of the Music Showcase is to encourage creativity and bravery in performance, as well as practicing our audience member skills (listening, focused, silent, still, etc.). Congratulations to all of our brave performers! While we could not take a photo of every student that participated (that would be hundreds of photos!), here are snapchats of a few students while they were performing throughout the week:
Celebrating NAAPID In Ann Arbor Public Schools, we celebrate National African-American Parent Involvement Day (NAAPID). At King, this is an invitation to all parents to join our learning during the day! During our NAAPID window in the music classroom, our Kindergarten students read a book by Mary J. Blige called Mary Can! and practiced speaking things that we can do over a hip hop track to a steady beat. Celebrating Valentine's Day Some of our kiddos celebrated Valentine's Day by learning a dance that sounds like this: Heel, toe, on the line. Will you be my Valentine? Heel, toe, on the line. Maybe 'yah' or maybe 'nein!' Check out some of our kindergarteners dancing below:
February is Black History Month! In our classroom we purposefully use songs, rhythms, and information from as many cultures as we can throughout the year. However, we do highlight BHM through our activities and in our bookshelf. Check back throughout the month to see our learning as it is happening! You can also see the books that we will be using in our classroom in our bookshelf, pictured below: The titles we are using this month:

Students are encouraged to practice the songs at home, and the International Night Organizing committee with the help of parent volunteers will have 2-3 afterschool practice sessions with the entire group at the end of January and the beginning of February to ensure a successful performance.
This week, our Second Graders sang a Sioux lullaby, added drums, added xylophones, and came up with their own lyrics. Here are 2R's lyrics:
Our Fifth Graders finished their Hip Hop Book Project - this week was our last chance to record! It was a big week for our Fourth Graders - ukulele time! We learned how to play the C and F chords, as well as our first song: Are You Sleeping? (a side note: the students pictured all wanted to be in the video [contrary to their faces!]) |
