Did you know that "Over the River and Through the Woods" is actually a Thanksgiving song? Our Fourth Graders learned all about the song and then created their own lyrics. Check them out: Young Fives celebrated Turkey Day this week in music class by learning a song called "Gobble, Gobble, Gobble." We then traveled to the gym and played a game (like Duck, Duck, Goose) using the song! The Third Graders learned how to do some Bollywood dances and added those dance moves to a Diwali song, The Happy Diwali Song. We also spent some time learning Over the River and Through the Wood, and added some improvisation! Check it out below: Our First Graders added xylophones on the steady beat to our song, Gobble Gobble Gobble. We also rotated through each instrument type and played a game with a stuffed turkey. This was a big deal for our first graders, as it was the first time this year we have had everyone on an instrument at the same time! One of my favorite borrowed lessons uses a book called Bee Bim Bop, by Linda Sue Park. In this lesson, our Second Graders sing these words:
Bee bim bop, bee bim bop, mixed up rice. Bee bim bop, bee bim bop, tastes so nice! Add veggies and some meat, kimchee on the top, mix it all together for some bee bim bop! We mixed using big spoons and added some darbuka drums (this drum is known by many names all over the world!) to accent the song while we read the book. Our musicians focused on two holidays this week: Veteran's Day and Diwali! Veteran's Day Our Young Fives and Kindergarteners learned a song called "See the Veteran" (sung to the tune of Frère Jacques) and chose instruments to accompany themselves. We then compiled all of their work: We also learned about Diwali, which is a holiday that many King students celebrate. Some of the videos/songs we used to enhance our learning can be found here:
Our second graders figured out the roots of the accompaniment and played Boomwhackers while singing! Our First Graders got to close out their leaf unit and experience We're Going On A Leaf Hunt - we went outside to find leaves (while singing our leaf hunt song, of course) and then brought them back in to make rhythms. Here are some of our learners in action - check out the smiles! Our Young Fives rocked it his week while we sang and danced to some monster themes! We sang a book called Monsters Love Underpants (by C. Freedman & B. Cort) and used scarves to tell the story of The Shy Little Monster (song by Stephanie Leavell). Check out our actions for the song, above! Kindergarten finally got the chance to play glockenspiels! We finished up our farm unit by playing a game and singing The Farmer In the Dell, and added the glockenspiels to Peter, Peter, Pumpkin Eater.
