This week, our students learned about/reviewed Lunar New Year and how it is celebrated. We also learned a song called "Gong Xi" from China and did a variety of related activities. Check them out below! The First Graders enjoyed learning about Lion Dancers and watched a video from the Hong Kong Orchestra to celebrate the Lunar New Year. We talked about the different instruments we saw and heard since many of the instruments may be unfamiliar. By far, though, the students' favorite part were the lions! The Second Graders, Third Graders, and Fourth Graders also played along with a video using notation that we reviewed. We played using red musical instruments (lummi sticks, rhythm sticks, egg shakers) because red is a sign of luck in Chinese culture. We had both "easy" and "challenge" play alongs.
One of our Third Grade classes also had the opportunity to play "Gong Xi" using Boomwhackers: Our Fifth Graders did not have class on Monday due to the holiday celebrating Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday, but on Wednesday, we continued our work on the King 5th Grade Songbook. The students are working to think of a song that is important to them and/or their family. We will be doing research on these songs and compiling them into our first ever songbook! Our Kindergarten students enjoyed "Gong Xi" (above) and loved singing with the video. They also were introduced to ta and titi this week, and created their own well wishes using the new rhythms. Here are some videos of one of our Kindergarten classes practicing writing the new rhythms!

This Friday, we honored the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at King Elementary School by having a school-wide assembly. Several of our Student Council members gave speeches inspired by Dr. King's life, Mrs. Hagan's fourth grade class recited Dr. King's "I Have A Dream" speech, the entire school sang a song called "Sing About Martin," and the fifth graders sang in their first choral performance ever! They sang a song inspired by Ghandi, titled "Be the Change" and written by Marc Kaplan and Colin Britt, as published in the Justice Choir Songbook (which can be found here). Congratulations to our performers and to our whole school!
