Our Second Graders added to their Percussion Family knowledge this week as we learned about hand drums, egg shakers, xylophones, piano, chimes, and tambourine. Did you know that the piano is not a string instrument, but is actually a percussion instrument? Ask your second grader why! We also did a lot of rhythm work this week. When we got really good at playing tas, titis, and sh, then we got to play them on the xylophones. We also created our own rhythms using ghosts (ta) and pumpkins (titi). Check out our students leading their classes in performing their own rhythm creations:
This week, the Third Grade students learned a chant about a bear: Fuzzy Wuzzy was a bear. Fuzzy Wuzzy had no hair. Fuzzy Wuzzy wasn't fuzzy, was he? We added movement and xylophones and fell all over each other trying to say the tongue twister and play at the right times. We also played a game called "Salami" which involves hand signs and intense listening. Then, we closed out our week's learning with a song called, "Down To the Baker's Shop" in which we learned about the differences between locomotor (moving from place to place) and non-locomotor (staying in one spot) movement. Check out one class' choices of locomotor/non-locomotor movement below:
Kindergarten continued their farm visits and this week we learned about sheep! We sang "Mary Had A Little Lamb," played maracas, and added the maracas to a game that uses the song, "Little Bo Peep." Listen to how well this kindergarten class sings the song for our game: The First Graders kicked off our leaf learning unit! We identified "leaf" and "crunchy," sang an autumn song, and added scarves. We also played leaf rhythms on instruments like maracas, egg shakers, and hand drums, and prepped our leaf/crunchy rhythm patterns for next week's activity! Check out this video of our students physically acting out "leaf" and "crunchy" below:

This week, our Fourth Graders focused on spooky rhythms! We watched "Spooky, Scary Skeletons" in several formats, played it on the Boomwhackers, and created spooky rhythms using new rhythms tika-ti and ti-tika.
