What is there to say about the 2020-2021 school year that hasn't been said? It was a doozy. It was a challenge. There were tears, and the never-ending "I can't do this" wall that my head seemed to find more often than I wanted. But there was also the opportunity to learn new learning platforms and new teaching technologies. We were able to listen to more music than ever before, and have intentional and meaning conversations about the music! My students and I learned about each other as we navigated the music class in COVID times. My school district started entirely virtually in the fall, and moved to hybrid learning in the early spring, but specials remained virtual. I ended up only taking two pictures of my teaching/learning pace, and here they are: Above: a photo of a lesson for first grade using "Cobbler, Cobbler." My compact xylophone (purchased specifically for hybrid learning from a gracious grant!) and mallets were an everyday item. You can also see my laptop, second monitor, a recorder, my weekly schedule, and a reminder to take a screen shot of every class for attendance. Above: a photo for a lesson with Kindergarten students, introducing B.B. King and his "One Shoe Blues" (a collaboration with Sandra Boynton, an excellent children's author). Note the large water container, blue light glasses, slide whistle, and notebook to keep track of quick thoughts!
There were definitely some parts of this past school year that I really enjoyed, but I am looking forward to a school year with the students in the music classroom, making music together!
