Our first and second graders created a virtual spring concert celebrating springtime! From the YouTube page: Thanks for viewing our Virtual Concert! This year we have overcome many challenges and had a lot of fun making music together. This spring, the first and second graders learned a lot of songs; some songs were new-to-us and some were old favorites. Each class learned all of the songs, and then chose one song to record and personalize - some added instruments, props, language, or movement. Our first graders focused on songs in English, and our second graders challenged themselves with languages from around the world. Mr. Clarkson’s Class: Down By the Bay A long-time favorite of young children, Down By the Bay is a great opportunity to practice rhyming and joke-telling! We spent a few weeks tying into the first grade curriculum by talking about rhyming, reading rhyming books, and singing rhyming songs to specifically prepare for this song. The brave students who chose to share their jokes came up with the jokes on their own and did a wonderful job! Mrs. Nascimento’s Class: Mr. Sun These sweet students chose to sing Mr. Sun, accompanied by ukulele, with motions to share with their families and friends. The song was particularly appropriate for this spring, as we experienced quite a few rainstorms while we were in music class together! Mrs. Hong’s Class: Rain, Rain, Go Away After singing the traditional song, the students in Mrs. Hong’s class chose to add xylophones, and wanted to augment the song using word chains. We brainstormed words and rhythms that were related to rain, and practiced our rhythms while playing the xylophones in between renditions of the song. Ms. Gooel’s Class: I Like To Sing I Like To Sing is actually a Ukranian folk song, sung by children in the spring time as they celebrate the weather. The song popped into my social media feed just as the Ukranian-Russian war was beginning and it was incredibly moving to hear how proud our King kids were to learn a song that was from halfway across the world, in the original language. The students also created their own verses, which they performed in our recording. Mr. Kiebler’s Class: The Holi Song Written by Manju Durairaj, a Chicago-area music educator, Holi Hain is a bilingual song celebrating Holi - the Indian festival of colors. Our students were instantly attracted to the song based on its repetitive refrain and the ability to add flair! Mrs. Teshima’s Class: Kaeru no uta This Japanese children’s song is about a frog and the sounds it makes while singing. It is a great springboard for talking about form (the students in Mrs. Teshima’s class created an ABCBA song, with A=Japanese song, B=frog guiro rhythms, and C=boomwhacker version of the song), singing in parts (the students were able to sing the song in two and even three part rounds!) and singing while playing instruments. We hope you enjoyed our virtual concert and cannot wait to make music together in the fall! Please check out the Virtual Spring Concert, prepared by our Young 5's and Kindergarten students! All of the music (lyrics, melodies, accompanying instruments, etc) was created by the students themselves. Bravo to all! This week, the Second Graders reviewed a song that we learned back in the wintertime - "Let's go, let's go, it's time to play in the snow..." but we changed the words a little bit!
Let's go, let's go, it's time to get out of school. What will we do? What will we do? Watch, we'll give you a clue!" We combined the song with xylophones and acting out what we might do this summer - as a class, in small groups, and individually. This game is such a good opportunity for students to practice their dramatic play, movement, interpretation, and musicianship skills while celebrating the end of the school year! |
